Henry Carey's Harmony of Interests, 1851 points to it - "the other we may be proud to call the American system, for it is the only one ever devised the tendency of which was that of elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world.”
Which came via Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin, and France - Colbertism, and Germany - Cameralism as the article shows. And as Sam Labrier points out - via Colbert, Leibniz and Vattel's influence. A thread of this ever preset great tapestry of good humans are weaving.
This influence from those times before the mid 1800s is much broader than any one individual.
My guess is that part of this tapestry are many threads of how to expect and deal with the various abuses of power intent on removing any ideas or people in their way. This is what this article and your many articles and research are about - vast abuses of power. Sort of like the livestream Genocide of Palestine. The lies, deceptions et al are being shown to the world in real time. The world is fed up more so each day.
The difference is stark between what the Genocidalists are doing and those working 24/7 to end Genocide. Not just to end this Genocide of Palestine - to clean up the incredible messes that mass destruction and mass slaughter brings - to rebuild a new Palestine where all the people that live there are treated respectfully, fairly and kindly as valuable people of the region.
The ability to clear the confusion of the American System and other good ideas is essential. It is part of the stream of humanity since the dawn of time.
Leibniz (1646 - 1716) didn't have a clue he was building an American System. America wasn't even a daydream way back then.
While the American System could be considered a failure. Same with the French Revolution. Enlightenment. All failures. Or were they? Take a look at all the good done and what remains.
These failures didn't disappear they are ideas, ways of being that have added many threads to the stream of humanity's tapestry. Always ready for more good use - uses never dreamed before.
What would be interesting would be to trace other ideas and ways to see who was involved with them. What were the times like that helped the ideas unfold. Where else in the world have these ideas and ways shown up. Don't think that the same ol scoundrels won't show up to stop good ideas if they can. They are always there.
Once upon a time the internet of the day was the Pope's postal system. In the 1600's letters were circulated by people interested in sharing ideas. People of different languages spoke via the letters - in Latin (aka Google Translate). Women too knew Latin and used the postal system. Perhaps this helped encourage the Enlightenment. And influenced teaching of both boys and girls. An idea that showed up in France during revolution time. Sure enough Joseph Lakanal did just that. He submitted legislation that the state provide free elementary education for boys and girls. The plan was rejected. After Robespierre was executed by guillotine a version of Lakanal's plan was implemented.
Slaver.y was ended sometime after the destructive Civil War, more or less - now it is called human trafficking.
A more fair world economic system can be implemented.
Genocide can end. And the many terrible messes can be cleaned up.
It is the ever flowing streams and deep rivers of humanity at work and at play.
Perhaps it is time for speeches and the renting of venues to make such speeches! Podcasts and posts are great! Books do their job! Speeches stir souls! Find a pub or park, set up some audio and video and let it rip! I want to hear a crowd cheer! Tell me your plan?
The argument for protectionism versus free trade reminds me of the argument for globalism versus nationalism. Globalism ideally posits the notion of the benefits of individual activity without the interference of national considerations. In other words, ideally, the best producers make the products and the best managers control the functioning of the world. Theoretically, the material benefits to be gained by increasing productivity will make up for any local dislocations resulting from foreign competition.
In reality, the tremendous advantages conferred by group actions, most likely based on national, ethnic or religious ethnocentrism, outweigh any advantages. I've read lot of libertarian literature. The libertarians fantasize that syndicates and cabals can be countered by just hiring some private protection agency.
Free trade is exactly analogous. Theoretically, free trade is all upside, the most efficient producers make whatever product they're most capable of making. In reality, free trade is always managed and controlled by a nation, bank, cartel or other organized interest. The upshot is, any individual always has to have protection. There's no such thing as the rugged individual. The group always wins. So, the smart individual finds the group with which he has the best protection.
Very important piece tying the benefits of studying history in its universal essence for humanity to the geopolitics of the present day!
👏👏👏
So much information packed in all of those articles...you two should seriously consider beginning an online history college.
Yes, the course could be called ‘The American System of Carey, Clay…and Chung’!
Haha. But seriously we should think of setting up a curriculum Gerry. Maybe when you and Magdalena next visit we can discuss this further. ;)
I'd help you with whatever you need. It's very important people become informed citizens at present.
There is a stream of humanity embedded in your many writings. Ever present.
